Air cargo faces major challenges but also growth opportunities

key benefits of Air Freight Forwarding

With our a strong position in the global airfreight business, the U-Freight Group was very interested in some comments made at last week’s IATA World Cargo Symposium by Marco Bloemen, managing director of consultant Aevean, as reported on in an excellent Air Cargo News article.

According to the article, Mr Bloemen said the air cargo market faces a year of major geopolitical challenges, but also key opportunities with the continued growth of high-tech and e-commerce volumes.

He provided a thorough overview of thethe impact of the recent outbreak of war in the Middle East on the air cargo market, and explained what has been happening to air cargo capacity in the region, and how airlines have been reacting.

During the presentation, Bloemen also delved into the performance of air cargo last year, highlighting the challenges faced by the market but also some areas of strong growth.

Figures from Aevean show that last year, high tech was the fastest growing segment with volumes up 25% year on year, while l low value e-commerce was the second fastest growing segment with volumes up by 16% compared with 2024, although this increase is down on the 43% increase registered in 2024 due to the US ending its de minimis exemption.

The article reported that overall, Bloemen said that 2026 was shaping up to be another unpredictable year for air cargo.
