Drewry World Container Index jumps 12% amid rising global shipping pressures

With our large portfolio of international container shipping services for both LCL and FCL cargoes, we note that global container freight rates continued their upward trajectory last week, with the Drewry World Container Index (WCI) rising 12% to USD2,553 per 40ft container, highlighting renewed pressure across major east-west trade lanes.

The increase has been driven primarily by higher rates on Transpacific and Asia-Europe routes, as carriers implement Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS), Peak Season Surcharges (PSS), and tighter capacity management measures.

According to Drewry, freight rates from Shanghai to New York climbed 14% to USD4,252 per 40ft container, while Shanghai to Los Angeles rates increased 10% to USD3,357. Asia-Europe services also experienced significant gains, with Shanghai to Genoa up 20% and Shanghai to Rotterdam rising 11%.

Market conditions are being influenced by a combination of factors, including stronger-than-expected cargo demand, blank sailings, rising bunker costs, and ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz. Carriers are also bringing forward peak season pricing strategies as shippers accelerate bookings amid concerns over vessel space availability.

Drewry noted that seven blank sailings have already been announced on Transpacific routes for this week as shipping lines continue efforts to manage available capacity. Additional General Rate Increases (GRIs) have also been announced by several carriers.

Industry analysts expect freight rates to remain firm in the short term as supply chain disruptions, fuel surcharges, and capacity controls continue to impact global container shipping markets. U-Freight continues to monitor developments in global container shipping lanes closely.
