The U-Freight Group delivers cost-effective international container shipping services for LCL and FCL cargoes, including in the trans-Atlantic trade.
So, we were interested to read various media reports quoting data from benchmark provider Xeneta’s eeSea that indicates that an injection of capacity into the trans-Atlantic, driven by Mediterranean Shipping Co, is set to drive January tonnage on the trade to a record high.
The eeSea data on JOC.com’s Gateway shipping dashboard appears to suggest that container lines are deploying more than 435,000 teu in January between North Europe and the US East and Gulf coasts, while also blanking the most tonnage since January 2021. The JoC says says that in comparison to the same month a year ago, container shipping tonnage in January will be 64% higher.
Clearly, with US import volumes from Europe and container spot rates on the trade remaining steady despite tariff pressures, with tonnage rising next month and moderating only slightly in February, the trade appears to be heading into greater overcapacity in early 2026.
