The improvement was led by higher rates on Asia\u2013US services following the introduction of Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) and Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) by major ocean carriers.<br><br>Spot rates from Shanghai to New York rose 7 percent week on week to USD3,721 per 40ft container, while rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles climbed 5 percent to USD3,062.<br><br>Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) increased EFS charges on Asia\u2013US East Coast services from USD430 to USD644 per 40ft container and on Asia\u2013US West Coast services from USD272 to USD467. Meanwhile, CMA CGM introduced a Peak Season Surcharge of USD2,000 per 40ft container effective from 1 May.<br><br>Drewry said the latest increase reflects carriers\u2019 continued efforts to stabilise rates through surcharge mechanisms and capacity management amid volatile operating conditions. Analysts also noted that geopolitical tensions affecting fuel markets continue to influence freight pricing globally.<br><br>On the Asia\u2013Europe trade lane, rate movements were more modest. Shanghai to Rotterdam rates edged up 2 percent to USD2,170 per 40ft container, while Shanghai to Genoa rose 1 percent to USD3,075.<br><br>Carriers including CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and MSC have also announced new Freight All Kinds (FAK) rates for mid-May, targeting between USD3,500 and USD4,500 per 40ft container on Asia\u2013North Europe routes and up to USD4,600 on Asia\u2013Mediterranean services.
