The news that container shipping lines are introducing new seasonal services through the Northern Sea Route (NSR), offering shippers an alternative between North Asia and Northern Europe as Arctic waters become increasingly navigable during the summer ice season, is of interest to the U-Freight Group’s and our international container shipping services for both LCL and FCL cargoes.
According to shipping analyst Linerlytica, a series of services launched or announced in August will add capacity to the Asia\u2013North Europe trade and help ease pressure on conventional routes.
The U-Freight Group is monitoring these developments and considering the range of routing options that may be available to customers. As demand develops for faster or more flexible Asia\u2013Europe ocean freight solutions, U-Freight will assess whether Northern Sea Route services can provide a suitable additional option for specific customer requirements, alongside the established conventional routes and other multimodal solutions we offer in the China-Europe trade.
South Korean carrier PanStar is joining Chinese operators Sea Legend, New New Shipping and OVPS Shipping in deploying services via the Russian Arctic to Northern Europe and Baltic Russia.
Chinese carrier Sea Legend is among those offering seasonal Arctic capacity, while New Legend is planning up to eight near-weekly sailings on its Arctic Express Service (CAX) during the summer navigation period. Sea Legend’s the first voyage is scheduled to depart Ningbo-Zhoushan on 15 August aboard the 1,740 teu Dubai Tower.
The Northern Sea Route offers the potential for significantly shorter transit times between Asia and Europe compared with conventional ocean services. With many Asia\u2013Europe services continuing to avoid the Red Sea and transit via the Cape of Good Hope, the Arctic route can reduce sailing distances considerably during the limited seasonal navigation window.
Global supply chains continue to demand greater flexibility and resilience. The Polar Silk Road provides an alternative option for time-sensitive shipments that need to arrive faster than conventional ocean freight but without the higher costs associated with air transport.
Meanwhile, PanStar is preparing its first container service via the Arctic route. The South Korean company has deployed the 2,700 teu PanStar Acro on a planned service linking Busan with Northern European ports.
The vessel is scheduled to depart Busan on 22 August and arrive in Felixstowe on 9 September, representing a transit time of approximately 18 days. After Felixstowe, the vessel is expected to call at Rotterdam, Hamburg and Gdansk before returning to Asia via the Arctic.
China\u2019s New New Shipping is also reported to be deploying three vessels on voyages between China, Russia and Northern Europe using the NSR.
The growth in container services reflects the increasing commercial interest in the Arctic route during the summer navigation season. According to the Centre for High North Logistics, the Northern Sea Route recorded 103 transit voyages by 88 vessels between 30 June and 30 November in 2025, including 15 container ship voyages.
While the route remains seasonal and operationally complex, the latest services underline the shipping industry\u2019s search for greater flexibility and alternative routing options at a time when conventional Asia\u2013Europe supply chains continue to face disruption and longer transit times.
Any use of Arctic services would depend on customer demand, cargo requirements, service availability and operational considerations during the limited seasonal navigation window.
