At U-Freight Korea, we recently worked on a separate project involving an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System, or EGCS, moving from Korea to Athens, Greece. The project required two 40-foot flat-rack containers, cargo preparation, flat-rack loading, lashing supervision and ocean freight coordination with an overseas logistics partner. This is how we approached the project and the main points we considered as the large marine equipment moved internationally.

Why EGCS equipment needs project cargo planning

An EGCS, also known as a marine exhaust gas scrubber system, is not ordinary containerised cargo when the equipment is large or oversized. The dimensions, weight, lifting points, centre of gravity, packing, securing method and final delivery location all affect the transport plan.

For a project like this, we need to look beyond the ocean freight booking. Our planning can involve:

•Reviewing cargo dimensions, weights and technical information

•Checking the origin route and export-port requirements

•Selecting suitable flat-rack equipment

•Preparing the cargo for lifting and transport

•Coordinating flat-rack loading

•Reviewing securing and lashing requirements

•Supervising the agreed loading and lashing work

•Coordinating ocean freight and project milestones

•Reviewing customs, port handling and final delivery requirements

The equipment, carrier, port, container and final delivery arrangements need to work together. A vessel service alone does not confirm that an oversized shipment can be accepted or delivered.

Our freight forwarding services cover import, export and international forwarding coordination. For OOG marine equipment, we review the actual cargo and route before confirming the service scope.

Our EGCS project from Korea to Athens

The project involved an EGCS manufactured in Korea and shipped to Athens, Greece, in cooperation with an overseas logistics partner. This was a separate project from our ongoing ship-spares and ICN warehouse work.

The equipment required two 40-foot flat-rack containers. One unit was approximately 9.2 metres in length and the second was approximately 6.9 metres in length. The combined project volume was approximately 200 CBM. We are using rounded figures here; the final dimensions, weights and loading arrangement were reviewed for the actual shipment.

The project required us to coordinate several activities rather than treat the shipment as a standard container booking. We reviewed the route, prepared the cargo information, coordinated flat-rack loading, followed the lashing arrangements and aligned the ocean freight movement with the origin and destination requirements.

Every large marine equipment project has its own constraints. The final plan depends on the actual packed dimensions, gross weight, lifting points, equipment availability, carrier acceptance, port rules and destination handling. The same arrangement cannot simply be copied to another EGCS or marine system.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" data-id="4956" data-src="https://ufreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/圖片_20261027145051_30_28-1024x768.jpg" alt="cargo lifting points 2" class="wp-image-4956 lazyload" data-srcset="https://ufreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/圖片_20261027145051_30_28-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://ufreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/圖片_20261027145051_30_28-300x225.jpg 300w, https://ufreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/圖片_20261027145051_30_28-768x576.jpg 768w, https://ufreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/圖片_20261027145051_30_28-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://ufreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/圖片_20261027145051_30_28-16x12.jpg 16w, https://ufreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/圖片_20261027145051_30_28-scaled.jpg 667w" data-sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==" style="--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; We need to consider whether the ports, carrier, equipment and final delivery team can handle the cargo safely and within the required time window.

This is also why early technical information matters. A change in height, packing, lifting point or delivery address can affect the route, equipment and cost.

Preparing the cargo and loading the flat racks

Cargo preparation starts with the right information. For EGCS and other marine equipment, we may need technical drawings, photographs, packed dimensions, gross weight, centre of gravity, lifting points and manufacturer or cargo-owner instructions.

Before loading, the team needs to understand how the equipment will be lifted, positioned and secured. Flat-rack loading may involve checking the payload, protecting vulnerable parts, confirming clearances, positioning the equipment according to the agreed plan and recording the cargo condition.

The larger and smaller units in this project were reviewed according to their own dimensions and handling requirements. One loading plan should not be assumed to apply to every piece of equipment, even when the units belong to the same system.

Our job is to bring the cargo information, equipment plan, loading team and freight milestones together. The technical responsibility remains with the appropriate cargo owner, engineer, surveyor or appointed contractor where those parties are required for the project.

Lashing supervision and ocean freight coordination

Lashing is a key part of an OOG movement because the cargo may experience lifting, terminal handling, road transport and vessel movement before it reaches the destination. The securing method needs to reflect the equipment’s weight distribution, centre of gravity, securing points, flat-rack characteristics and carrier requirements.

For this project, lashing supervision formed part of the preparation before the cargo moved into the ocean freight stage. We coordinated with the relevant teams, followed the agreed securing arrangement and raised any issue that needed attention before the cargo proceeded.

Ocean freight coordination connects the project milestones. Flat-rack release, cargo readiness, loading, lashing, terminal receiving, customs documentation and vessel cut-off all need to align. If one stage changes, the next stage may also need to be reviewed.

Our international logistics and distribution services include ocean freight, customs clearance, warehousing and cargo supervision. For a project like this, we confirm which party is responsible for technical checks, customs, port handling, freight and final delivery.

What we learned from this project

This EGCS project reinforced several points that we apply to oversized marine equipment planning:

•OOG cargo should be reviewed before the booking is treated as confirmed.

•Flat-rack availability can affect the shipping plan.

•Cargo preparation is directly linked to loading and lashing.

•Each unit needs its own dimensions, weight and handling review.

•Port and terminal requirements are part of the route plan.

•Destination handling should be considered before origin loading.

•Approximate figures are not a replacement for final technical data.

The project also shows the difference between moving a standard container and coordinating marine project cargo. A successful plan needs the right information and the right parties involved at each stage.

Information we need for an OOG assessment

If you are planning to move EGCS equipment or other oversized marine machinery from Korea, please provide the following where available:

•Equipment description and intended use

•Final packed dimensions and gross weight

•Number of units and proposed container type

•Technical drawings or photographs

•Lifting points, centre of gravity and handling instructions

•Packing, crating and protection details

•Origin and destination addresses

•Export and destination ports

•Required shipping date and delivery deadline

•Importer, consignee and customs information

•Required lifting, storage, port or final-mile services

•Carrier, shipyard, terminal or engineering instructions

The earlier we receive this information, the more time the relevant parties have to review the route, equipment, port and carrier constraints.
