Shanghai port surpasses 50 million teu for second year running

Reports in the international media indicate that the Port of Shanghai has handled 50 million teu for the second consecutive year.

With a comprehensive portfolio of international freight forwarding services through most of China’s main gateways, U-Freight notes that the port achieved this landmark a month earlier than it did in 2024.

The achievement underscored another record-breaking year for the port’s annual container throughput, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Yangshan Port Area’s opening.

The reports indicate that in the first eleven months of this year, Shanghai port handled 50.56 million teu, up 6.7% year on year. Its annual container throughput is expected to set a new record, maintaining its position as the world’s busiest container port for the 16th consecutive year.

In December 2005, the first phase of Shanghai’s Yangshan deep water port officially opened. Within five years, Shanghai’s annual container throughput surpassed Singapore’s for the first time, establishing it as the world’s largest container port.

‌In 2024, Shanghai port became the world’s first to exceed an annual throughput of 50 million teu. This success is attributed to the efficient operation of automated terminals, the expansion of new business models, and the development of new growth drivers, including the northern expansion of Yangshan.
