CMA CGM reverts to Cape of Good Hope routing

Global container carrier CMA CGM has reversed plans to expand its transits through the Suez Canal and Red Sea, deciding instead to reroute three major Asia–Europe services via the longer Cape of Good Hope passage around southern Africa.

The move reflects continued caution in response to what the carrier described as a “complex and uncertain international context.”

The affected services — the French Asia Line 1 (FAL1), French Asia Line 3 (FAL3) and Mediterranean Club Express (MEX) — had recently begun limited transits through the Suez Canal following the easing of security concerns in the region. CMA CGM’s decision to reinstate Cape routing underscores ongoing hesitancy among carriers to fully commit to the traditional shortcut linking Asia and Europe.

For shippers and logistics partners, this development highlights the unpredictable nature of global trade routes even as broader stability returns to key maritime chokepoints. Routing via the Cape of Good Hope typically adds significant transit time and distance compared with Suez Canal passage — factors that can influence freight rates, inventory planning, and overall supply chain efficiency.

Industry analysts say the step back by CMA CGM may not be purely driven by geopolitical risk, but could also signal a cautious commercial strategy amid evolving market conditions. Recent limited returns to Suez by other carriers — including Maersk’s restart of some Red Sea sailings — illustrate how lines are weighing both safety and cost considerations as they recalibrate networks for 2026.
