Drewry World Container index edges up

With our large portfolio of international container shipping services for both LCL and FCL cargoes, we note that the latest data from Drewry indicates a modest recovery in global container freight rates, with its composite World Container Index (WCI) rising by 2% week-on-week.

The composite index reflects a gradual stabilisation in pricing following a period of sustained declines earlier this year. Previous weeks had seen downward pressure on rates, with the index falling to around USD1,899 per feu container before rebounding in early March.

The recent increase has been driven primarily by firmer pricing on key Transpacific routes, supported by improved demand conditions after the Lunar New Year period. However, rate movements remain uneven across different lanes, with some Asia–Europe services continuing to experience softer pricing, despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Despite the uptick, overall freight rates remain significantly below the elevated levels seen during the pandemic-era peak, underlining the ongoing normalisation of the container shipping market. Market dynamics continue to be influenced by a combination of demand recovery, capacity management by carriers, and broader geopolitical factors affecting global supply chains.

Looking ahead, Drewry expects rates to fluctuate in the coming weeks, with the potential for further marginal increases in the short term. However, uncertainty persists, and longer-term rate direction will depend on global trade demand and capacity adjustments across major shipping routes.

For shippers and logistics providers, the modest rise in the WCI signals a potential turning point after several weeks of declining rates.
