Last week, the Drewry composite World Container Index (WCI) rose for the first time in four weeks, highlighting continued volatility in the global oceanfreight market.

The benchmark increased by 1% to US$4,297 per 40-foot container, with higher Transpacific spot rates driving the overall increase, which is having an impact on the U-Freight Group’s international container shipping services for both LCL and FCL cargoes.

For shippers, the latest movement reinforces the importance of close monitoring of market conditions and early planning around freight capacity and costs.

Transpacific rates move higher
<\/strong>
Drewry reported that Transpacific spot rates from Shanghai to New York increased by 4% to US$7,893 per 40-foot container, while Shanghai to Los Angeles rates rose by 3% to US$5,894.

Carriers have successfully implemented General Rate Increases as cargo volumes remained firm into August. Capacity has also been affected by continued congestion at ports in central and southern China.

According to Drewry’s Container Capacity Insight, carriers have scheduled eight blank sailings for this week, unchanged from last week. Drewry therefore expects rate volatility to ease during this week as available capacity remains relatively stable.

Asia-Europe market remains broadly stable
<\/strong>
Rates on the Asia-Europe trades have been more subdued.

Shanghai-Genoa rates fell by 2% to US$5,506 per 40-foot container, while Shanghai-Rotterdam rates remained unchanged at US$4,653.

Geopolitical and capacity pressures continue
<\/strong>
The wider east-west container freight market remains subject to considerable uncertainty. Tensions in the Middle East, changes in US tariff policy and congestion at Asian ports are all contributing to an unpredictable rate environment.

The resumption of hostilities between Iran and the United States in late July has added further uncertainty around shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while several carriers have introduced Emergency Fuel Surcharges from August.

Shipping lines are also continuing to manage available capacity through blank sailings and changes to individual services.

Drewry expects trade policy, geopolitical developments and port congestion to remain important influences on freight rates over the coming weeks.
